The day falls on October 8th of each year to honor and remember the senior public service retirees who have retired from service as key players in the country's workforce.
To mark the occasion, the 'National Pensions Day-2025' celebration, organized to pay tribute to the noble senior retirement community, was held on 08.10.2025 at the Wedamulla Pensions Holiday Resort premises, Kelaniya, under the patronage of the Hon. Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Dr. A.H.M.H. Abayaratne.
Despite being retired from public service in accordance with the prevailing legal conditions, the majority of retired seniors still have the potential to lead an active social and economic life. With the aim of creating a generation of such proud seniors, this year's National Pensions Day was organized under the theme 'A Healthy, Prosperous and Energetic Life'.
With that theme in mind, the event was colorful with several entertaining programs, including medical camps, free medical check-ups, Ayurvedic medical consultation services and treatments, lectures, and programs organized to provide guidance to retirees to live an active retirement life, prioritizing the health care of the retired senior community.
The Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government told the retirees that the government respects the right of all senior citizens to lead a dignified and comfortable retirement life and that necessary steps will be taken to secure those rights and to increase the retirement salary of pensionsers step by step. Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Mr. S. Alokabandara, stated that the ministry will make full interventions to ensure every step of the retirees' journey towards a socially and economically developed community, starting from the timely disbursement of pensions.
This year's National Pension Day came against a backdrop of many pensioners receiving the benefits of the pension revision provided to pensioners in the 2025 budget. Director General of Pensions Mr.Chaminda Hettiarachchi stated that steps will be taken to provide those benefits to the remaining pensioners who are entitled to the benefits as soon as possible. He also stated that the pension payment process is set to be further innovated according to the government's digitalization project. It was also said that the department is taking steps to provide many necessary guidelines through the intervention of the public and private sectors to actively lead a new life after the end of official duty.
The Hon. Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Dr. A.H.M.H., Deputy Minister P. Ruwan Senarath, Secretary to the Ministry, Mr. S. Aloka Bandara, Pension Department officials and invited government officials, retired artists and pensioners representing pensions associations participated in this event.
