A pension, which is paid to the dependents (Widow/widower/orphans) affected by the death of a male /female contributor, who demises whilst in armed service or after retirement.

• To dependents of the contributor, when the contributor demises whilst in service,
• When the widow/ widower is getting married again whilst receiving widows’/ widowers’ and orphans’ pension,
• Making the orphans entitled to orphans’ pension
• To the dependents due to the death of contributor after retirement on medical grounds
• To spouse and children of the officers of armed forces, who demises after retirement,

• Three Armed Forces should submit applications to the Department of Pensions for the demised person.
• At such occasions, where the person demises on terrorists activities whilst receiving service pension, the death of the person should be informed to the Divisional Secretariat and then the application applied for the armed forces and pension file should be submitted to the Department of Pensions by the Divisional Secretariat.

• When the widow/widower inform the Divisional Secretariat regarding their remarriage, the Divisional Secretariat should sent the application for armed forces and the pension file to the Department of Pensions.

• A male individual selected or deemed to be selected to be a contributor to the pensions scheme under section 06 of the Widows and Orphans’ Pension Scheme Act No 18 of 1970 (Armed Forces) and a female individual selected or deemed to be selected to be a contributor to the pensions scheme under section 06 of Widowers’ and Orphans’ Pension Scheme Act No 60 of 1998 (Armed Forces) become a contributor to the pension scheme from 01.08.1983.
• In case of a member in volunteer forces, opportunity has been given by Pension Circular No. 10/2009 to such person to be a contributor , if such person has been appointed before 01.09.1081 and serving by that date, and to the spouse and orphans, if the person has demised. Further, the persons, who become members of voluntary forces after 01.09.1981, should compulsorily be the members of widows and orphans’ pension scheme. (The period given to exercise their option has expired by 31.12.2012. –Pension Circular No. 2/2012)
• In case of a female member in voluntary forces, opportunity has been given by Pension Circular 10/2019 to exercise option to be a contributor of the pension scheme if she was in service as at 01.08.1983 receiving appointment before that date and further to spouse and children to exercise option for the same if the member has died. However that period given to exercise option has expired on 31.12.2012. Further, the members of voluntary forces, who have joined after 01.08.1983, should compulsorily contribute to the widowers’ and orphans’ pension fund.

• In terms of the section 26 of Widows’ and orphans’ pension scheme Act no 18 of 1970 (Armed Forces) and section 25 of Widowers’ and orphans’ pension scheme Act no 60 of 1998 (Armed Forces), the widow/widower of the marriage made by the contributor after stopping contributions to pension and the children of such marriage are not entitled to any pension.

• In terms of the section 27(1) of Widows’ and orphans’ pension scheme Act no 18 of 1970 (Armed Forces) and section 26 of Widowers’ and orphans’ pension scheme Act no 60 of 1998 (Armed Forces), a male contributor and female contributor respectively are not entitled to widows’/ widowers’ and orphans’ pension, when he/she demises within 12 months from the date of marriage without having children.
• However, it is possible to pay the whole or a part of the pension to widow/widower on the discretion of the Director General of Pensions.

• The spouse of the contributor or the orphans of male/ female contributor, if the spouse is not living, who are affected due to the death of contributor whilst in armed services or after retirement, are made entitled to widows’/ widowers’ and orphans pension.

• Legal spouse
• Unemployed children below the age of 26 years, if the spouse is not living.
